Weekend in Melbourne

I was invited some months ago to Nat’s birthday bash which happened a couple of weeks ago (as of writing this) in Melbourne. Nap’s been a friend for a long time, but nowadays, she live in Hobart. I took the opportunity to pick up a new lens and walk around town with it, while ticking a few other boxes, mostly picking up a couple of blurays of Possession and Barry Lyndon, checking out indie bookstores, and taking photos of walls. I wish I stayed a bit longer.

For those visiting Melbourne, and looking for street photography, Chinatown at night is where it’s at. There’s a convenience store, when its all lit up, you can just snap away. If you want graffiti and street art to shoot, a lot of people go to Hosier Lane. But it’s been stupidly busy for any number of years. Not only is good work defaced in moments, it’s usually filled with selfie-tourists or those looking for a ‘gram. Go east along Flinders Lane, there’s other spots, less busy in both respects. There’s another spot, but I’m keeping that one secret for now.

The new lens I bought is a Fuji GF 50mm f3.5. It’s the smallest of the GF lens line. Nice, sharp and a decent view. And much lighter and slightly less conspicuous than the 45mm I’ve been using the for the last year and a half.

More soon.
